Name Tracing Generator
Type a name, word or short phrase and watch the dotted sheet build itself. Choose the letter style, tracing guide, paper size and rows — then print one sheet, or the whole class at once.
Up to 60 characters. Longer phrases wrap onto the next line automatically.
Settings and recent names are kept in your browser only (localStorage) — nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
Up to 40 names. Each student gets their own page with their name in the page header, and every page prints in one job (choose “Save as PDF” for a single class file).
Pages use the letter style, tracing guide, case, paper and row settings from the single-sheet tab.
How the name tracing generator works
Type into the box and the sheet redraws on every keystroke — no submit button, no page reload. Names, single words and short phrases all work: “Emma”, “sight words”, “Room 3”. Anything longer than one line wraps onto the next line at a word boundary, so you never get letters chopped in half. Letters, numbers, spaces, apostrophes, hyphens and full stops are all accepted.
Letter style controls the letterforms. Print gives the block letters most schools teach first. Pre-cursive adds the little lead-in and lead-out strokes children meet before joined writing, and cursive switches to a joined script for older writers. Tracing guide controls how much support is left on the page: dotted outlines are traced, hollow outlines are coloured in, and fading guides start solid and get lighter row by row until the last row is written freehand. Numbered stroke guides label the order to write the letters in, and the direction arrow shows where the very first row starts.
Paper size and orientation matter for the printout: A4 or US Letter, portrait for short names and landscape when a long name needs more room on each line. The preview you see is the same artwork that is sent to the printer, so what you see is what comes out. Everything is generated in your browser — names are never uploaded, and no account is needed. Teachers can paste a whole class list into the batch tab to get one page per student in a single print job.
Frequently asked questions
Is the name tracing generator really free?
Yes. Type a name and print as many worksheets as you like, completely free and without an account. You can also save each sheet as a PDF from the print dialog.
What characters can I use in a name?
Letters, numbers, spaces, apostrophes, hyphens, full stops and commas — up to 60 characters, so a full name or a short phrase fits. That covers names such as Emma, Mary-Jane, O'Connor and Jr.
Do you store the names I type?
No. The worksheet is generated instantly in your browser, and your latest settings and class list are only saved in your own browser's localStorage so the page remembers them next time. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
Can I make one worksheet for the whole class?
Yes — open the Class batch tab, paste one name per line and press Generate class set. Each child gets their own page with their name in the header, and all pages print as one job, which you can save as a single PDF.
Why are the letters dotted instead of solid?
Dotted outlines let a child trace the correct pencil path through the letter. The gap between the dashes shows how far each stroke travels, which builds the muscle memory that solid letters cannot provide. Hollow and fading guides are also available when a child is ready for less help.
Does the printout match the preview?
Yes. The preview and the printed page are the same artwork, sized to the paper you chose (A4 or US Letter, portrait or landscape), so nothing shifts when you print or save as PDF.
Can I send a worksheet to another teacher?
Yes — press “Copy share link” or “Email to a teacher”. The link carries the name, letter style, tracing guide, case, paper, orientation and row count, so the sheet opens exactly as you set it up. You can also save a square-ish share image or a tall Pinterest image of the sheet.
